Jan, 15th, 2015, Students bored or lazy?/ Uczniowie leniwi czy znudzeni?

I promised to comment on the article that appeared in one of the most motivating and encouraging sites on  the net Mind Shift https://www.facebook.com/MindShift.KQED?fref=nf The page is great and having many interesting posts all the time. What attracted my atention recently was the article by Shelley Wright, Canadian teacher from Saskachewan (czizzz what a spelling?!) writing "she hates teachers saying "My sts are lazy!".

I thought about re-posting (if there's such word) it here but all in all I decided to comment. 

Please stop calling students lazy! is the article wrote ina really emotional way, maybe I wouldn't do it this way...but... Shelley makes few huge points:

1. "I’ve actually never met a lazy student. Bored? Yep. Disengaged? Yep. Unmotivated by irrelevant academic hoops? Yep. But lazy? No."

What is my view? I agree. I have never claimed my student is lazy, just not motivated enough. Did my students make me nervous when I saw marks like on a sinusoide, from the highest to the poorest. Yes. Lazy? No way.

2. "She (Shelley's daughter) has a variety of interests, but school rarely touches on them"

That is true. We hardly ever ask about our students interests. How can we know are they hard-working or lazy if we barely know about their lives? Having siblings, parents or friends? No idea untill they tell me. 

3."Let’s think really carefully before we label kids lazy and classes from Hell. Yesterday I tweeted out how much I hate when teachers call students lazy. 

Another educator responded:

A teacher at my gym bragged about posting article showing area test scores to remind his class about “how lazy they are.” WTH?

In turn, I responded:

Wow. If area test scores were posted to show how lazy teachers are, there would be outrage. At the very least."

Oops! that's a slippery road on the steepy hillside. Better be careful. Teachers lazy? How come? They evaluate their work regularly, attend self development workshops, fill in documentation, answer back parent's emails, sit after hours for free....and they are called lazy? No way. Lessons are so calm and sleepy, did with the teacher's book step by step, and you call them lazy? oh. plizzz... ;]

I hope you felt the irony. We are overworloaded by docs and lazy when doing lessons. Sorry, that's true.

All in all: I agree with her passionate post. Calm down, Shelley, please.

Tydzień temu na FB napisałam o pewnym artykule, który mnie zaintrygował.  Nie mówcie, że uczniowie sa leniwi, proszę! to artykuł napisany przez nauczycielkę Shelley Wright z Kanady, miasta Saskachewan (kojarzy mi sie z rodowitymi Indianami), która postanowiła wyrazić swoją, bardzo emocjonalną, opinię o nauczycielach twierdzących, że uczniowie sa leniwi.

Cały artykuł jest w j.angielskim i niestety nie mam aż tyle czasu na tłumaczenie go. Przytoczę tylko kilka ciekawych kwestii.

1. "Nigdy nie widziałam leniwego ucznia. Znudzonego? Tak. Niezaangażowanego? Tak. Zniechęconego? Tak."

Sądzę, ze każdy zna powiedzenie "Zdolny, ale leniwy". Beznadzieja. Wolę: Zdolny, ale nie zmotywowany. 

Jak jest? sami wiecie. Uczeń zmotywowany stanie na głowie żeby udowodnić, że robi cokolwiek w kierunku poprawy. A leniwy? co to w ogóle znaczy. Czyli jaki? Nie znam odpowiedzi.

2. "Moja córka ma liczne zainteresowania ale szkoła się tym nie interesuje"

Co wiemy o swoich uczniach? Że mają dysleksję? Dysgrafię? inne dys-? Tak wiemy, jeśli rodzice nam o tym powiedzą lub na czas dostarczą taką informację do szkoły. A poza tym? Nic. Może rodzice/ uczniowie powinni wypełniać informacje o zainteresowaniach w podaniach do szkoły? Powinni.

3. "Jeden z nauczycieli pochwalił się, że opublikował na swoim blogu wyniki testów swoich uczniów. Powiedział, że robił to by zobaczyli jak bardzo są leniwi." (bardzo luźne tłumaczenie dla ogólnego sensu)

Shelley odparła ze gdyby były takie testy pokazujące lenistwo nauczycieli to wszyscy by padli na kolana. Delikatnie mówiąc.

Ano tak. Padliby. Najłatwiej zrzucić odpowiedzialność za powodzenie lekcji tylko i wyłącznie na uczniów, a potem mówić ze klasa jest trudna, okropna i w ogóle co oni sobie myślą?! Dajcie spokój. Nie chce się wprowadzać innowacji bo trzeba uruchomić kreatywność i chęci. A nie ma ich. Więc nuuuda.

Artykuł ciekawy. Bardzo emocjonalny. Spokojnie, Shelley, spokojnie.
